1 History

1.1 Foundation and Enlightenment Era

The University of Göttingen was founded in 1734 by George II, King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover, and opened its doors to students in 1737. 1.2 19th Century: The Göttingen Seven

In 1837, the university gained international attention for the “Göttingen Seven” (Göttinger Sieben), a group of seven professors—including the brothers Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm—who protested the abolition of the liberal constitution of the Kingdom of Hanover by King Ernest Augustus.
