# Taiwan

Taiwan is an island located in East Asia, off the southeastern coast of mainland China. It is characterized by a diverse geography, including mountain ranges, plains, and coastal regions, and has a rich cultural heritage influenced by indigenous traditions and historical migrations. ### 1.1 Topography and climate

Taiwan’s topography is dominated by a central mountain range that runs from north to south, with over 200 peaks exceeding 3,000 meters in elevation. The highest point is Yu Shan (3,952 m). To the west, the terrain descends into fertile plains, while the eastern coast features steep cliffs and narrow valleys. The island lies in a subtropical climate zone, with warm, humid summers and mild winters. The northern region experiences year-round rainfall, while the south has a more marked dry season. Typhoons frequently occur from July to October.

The island is divided into 13 counties and 6 special municipalities. The capital, Taipei, is the political and cultural center, located in the north.
