# Student-Centered Learning ## 1 Theoretical Foundations Student-centered learning draws on multiple theoretical traditions that emphasize the active role of the learner in constructing meaning. These foundations provide the rationale for shifting educational authority and responsibility toward students. ### 1.1 Constructivism and Social Constructivism Constructivism posits that knowledge is not passively received but actively built by individuals through experience and reflection. Social constructivism extends this by highlighting the role of social interaction in cognitive development. #### 1.1.1 Piaget’s Cognitive Development Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development describes how children construct schemas through assimilation and accommodation. In student-centered learning, Piaget’s stages inform age-appropriate activities that challenge learners to reorganize their thinking. Educators provide hands-on experiences that allow students to encounter cognitive conflict and resolve it through exploration, rather than through direct transmission of facts. #### 1.1.2 Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development Lev Vygotsky introduced the zone of proximal development (ZPD), the gap between what a learner can do independently and what they can achieve with guidance. Student-centered approaches leverage this concept by designing tasks that are just beyond the learner’s current ability, with scaffolding provided by teachers or peers. Collaborative dialogue, peer tutoring, and guided inquiry all operationalize the ZPD. ### 1.2 Humanistic Psychology Humanistic psychology emphasizes the whole person, intrinsic motivation, and the innate drive toward self-actualization.
