Southeast Asia is a geographically and culturally diverse region located south of China and east of the Indian subcontinent, comprising eleven countries: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The region spans both mainland (Indochinese Peninsula) and maritime archipelagos, with a combined population exceeding 680 million. Known for its tropical climates, rich biodiversity, and historical trade crossroads, Southeast Asia exhibits a mosaic of indigenous traditions, colonial legacies, and modern economic dynamism, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a key regional organization.

### 1.1 Mainland Southeast Asia

#### 1.1.1 Topography and River Systems
Mainland Southeast Asia consists of the Indochinese Peninsula and the Malay Peninsula. Its topography is characterized by north–south mountain ranges, plateaus, and broad river valleys. Major rivers include the Mekong (flowing through Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam), the Irrawaddy (Myanmar), the Chao Phraya (Thailand), and the Red River (Vietnam). These rivers deposit fertile alluvial soils in their deltas, supporting intensive agriculture. The Tonle Sap in Cambodia is a unique floodplain lake that reverses flow seasonally.

#### 1.1.2 Climate and Monsoons
The region experiences a tropical monsoon climate. The southwest monsoon (May–October) brings heavy rainfall from the Indian Ocean, while the northeast monsoon (November–February) brings drier, cooler air. Mainland areas have distinct wet and dry seasons; the Mekong Delta, for example, floods annually. Tropical cyclones occasionally affect coastal Vietnam and the Philippines. Average temperatures range from 25°C to 30°C year-round, with higher humidity in lowland areas.
