# Reception (Education) ## 1 Overview and Purpose ### 1.1 Definition and Age Range Reception is the first year of primary school in England and Wales, designed for children aged four to five years. Most children enter Reception in the September following their fourth birthday, although statutory school age in England and Wales is the term after a child turns five.
