**Prussia** was a historically significant German state that originated in the 16th century as a duchy, later elevated to a kingdom in 1701. It played a central role in the unification of Germany in 1871 and became the dominant component of the German Empire. Prussia was dissolved by Allied decree in 1947 following World War II. Its political, military, and cultural influence shaped much of modern German and European history. ## 1 History ### 1.1 Origins and foundation #### 1.1.1 Teutonic Order and the Duchy of Prussia The territory that became Prussia was originally inhabited by Baltic tribes. In the 13th century, the Teutonic Order, a German crusading military order, conquered the region and established a monastic state. Following the Order’s secularization in 1525 during the Reformation, Grand Master Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach converted the territory into the Duchy of Prussia, a fief of the Kingdom of Poland. This marked the beginning of a secular Prussian state. #### 1.1.2 Personal union with Brandenburg In 1618, the Duchy of Prussia passed to the Hohenzollern Electors of Brandenburg, creating a personal union between the two territories. Brandenburg, a core state of the Holy Roman Empire, was separated geographically from Prussia, which lay outside imperial borders. This dual inheritance laid the foundation for a larger Brandenburg–Prussian state, with Berlin as its political center and Königsberg as its eastern outpost. ### 1.2 Rise of the Kingdom (1701–1795) #### 1.2.1 Frederick the Great and the Silesian Wars In 1701, Elector Frederick III of Brandenburg crowned himself King Frederick I in Prussia, elevating the duchy to a kingdom. His grandson, Frederick II (later called “the Great”), ascended the throne in 1740 and immediately launched the First Silesian War against Austria, claiming the wealthy province of Silesia. Through the three Silesian Wars (1740–1763), Prussia not only secured Silesia but also emerged as a major European power
