Phonology is the study of how sounds are organized and used in a language. 2 Phonemes and distinctive features

Phonemes and distinctive features are core tools for describing how sound systems work. Phonemes are abstract units that distinguish meaning, while distinctive features break sounds into smaller properties that explain classes and patterns. Together, they offer a way to analyze inventories, contrasts, and regular phonological behavior.

2.1 Phoneme theory

Phoneme theory treats the phoneme as a functional sound unit in a language. A phoneme is not simply a physical sound, but a category defined by its role in contrast. Different languages may organize similar sounds into different phoneme systems depending on how those sounds are used.

3 Phonological structure

Phonological structure concerns the organization of sounds into larger units. Segments do not occur randomly; they combine into syllables, words, and prosodic patterns according to language-specific principles. These structural levels influence how speech is pronounced and interpreted.

3.1 Syllable structure

The syllable is a major unit of phonological organization. It helps determine how sounds are grouped, how sequences are licensed, and where stress or tone may attach. Syllable structure also plays an important role in phonological processes such as deletion, insertion, and simplification.

3.1.1 Onset

The onset is the initial consonant or consonant cluster of a syllable. Some languages permit complex onsets, while others restrict syllables to a single initial consonant or none at all. Onset patterns often influence which sound combinations are acceptable.

Pitch accent is a prominence system in which a particular syllable is associated with a notable pitch movement or tonal event. It differs from ordinary stress by making pitch especially central to contrast or emphasis. Pitch accent systems are often intermediate between stress-based and tonal systems.

3.3 Prosody

Prosody covers the suprasegmental features that extend beyond individual sounds. It includes timing, melody, and phrasing, all of which shape how speech is organized into larger units. Prosodic features can signal emphasis, sentence type, and discourse structure.

3.3.1 Rhythm

Rhythm refers to patterns of timing and alternation in speech. Languages differ in how they distribute prominence and duration across syllables and words. Rhythm contributes to the overall feel of a language and interacts with stress and vowel reduction.

3.3.2 Intonation

Intonation is the pitch pattern of a phrase or sentence. It can mark questions, statements, continuation, contrast, or emotional nuance. Although intonation is often linked to communication at the sentence level, it is still part of phonological structure because it follows systematic patterns.

4 Phonological processes

Phonological processes are regular changes that affect sounds in particular contexts. They often make pronunciation easier, more consistent, or more adapted to surrounding sounds. Such processes can operate within words, across morpheme boundaries, or in connected speech.

4.1 Assimilation

Assimilation occurs when one sound becomes more like a neighboring sound. The change may involve place, manner, voicing, or other properties. Assimilation is widespread because it reflects the tendency for speech sounds to influence one another during articulation.

4.2 Dissimilation

Dissimilation is the opposite tendency, in which similar sounds become less alike. This process is less common than assimilation but still important in some languages and historical changes. It can help avoid repeated or awkward sound sequences.

4.3 Deletion and insertion

Deletion removes a sound in a particular environment, while insertion adds a sound where a sequence would otherwise be difficult or disallowed. These processes can simplify pronunciation or adjust forms to fit phonotactic patterns. They are common in both casual speech and historical development.

4.4 Neutralization

Neutralization occurs when a contrast is lost in a specific context. Two sounds that are distinct elsewhere may merge in a particular position, such as at the end of a word or before certain consonants. Neutralization shows that phonological contrasts can be context-sensitive.

4.5 Feature spreading and harmony

Feature spreading happens when a property extends from one segment to another across a word or phrase. Harmony is a broader pattern in which multiple segments share a feature, such as vowel height, rounding, or tongue position. These processes create regular agreement patterns and can shape the overall sound of a language.

5 Phonological rules and constraints

Phonological analysis has often described sound patterns either as rule-governed transformations or as outcomes of competing structural constraints. These approaches differ in how they represent grammatical knowledge, but both aim to explain why languages permit some forms and reject others.

5.1 Rule-based phonology

Rule-based phonology explains sound patterns through ordered rules that apply in specific contexts. A rule may transform one segment into another, delete material, or add information when conditions are met. This model emphasizes the step-by-step derivation of surface forms from abstract representations.

5.2 Generative phonology

Generative phonology treats phonological knowledge as a set of productive patterns that speakers internalize. It is concerned with explaining how speakers generate and interpret well-formed pronunciations. In this framework, rules are often formalized so that they capture regular alternations and their ordering.

5.3 Optimality Theory

Optimality Theory analyzes phonology as competition among possible outputs. Instead of applying a sequence of rules, the grammar evaluates candidates and selects the best one according to ranked constraints. This approach has been influential in describing cross-linguistic variation and the interaction of structural pressures.

5.3.1 Constraints

Constraints are formal requirements on output forms. Some favor faithful preservation of underlying material, while others prefer markedness avoidance or structural simplicity. Different languages may share the same constraints but rank them differently.

5.3.2 Candidate evaluation

Candidate evaluation compares possible pronunciations and assesses how well each satisfies the constraint system. The selected form is the one that best balances competing pressures. This process explains why a language may allow a less-than-perfect form if it violates fewer important constraints than its alternatives.

5.3.3 Ranking and harmony

Ranking determines which constraints matter most in a language. Higher-ranked constraints override lower-ranked ones when conflicts arise. Harmony refers to the degree to which a candidate meets the overall demands of the ranking system, making it the most acceptable output among competitors.

6 Phonological acquisition and change

Phonological systems are learned by children, transmitted across generations, and altered over time. Acquisition and change are therefore central to understanding why sound systems remain stable in some respects while shifting in others. Variation within a language can also provide the conditions for broader change.

6.1 Language acquisition

Language acquisition involves learning the sound contrasts and patterns of a native language. Children must identify which differences are meaningful, which are predictable, and which combinations are allowed. Phonological development often proceeds from broad perceptual distinctions toward more refined and language-specific categories.

6.2 Historical sound change

Historical sound change refers to the gradual alteration of phonological patterns over time. These changes can affect individual sounds, sound classes, syllable structure, or prosodic systems. Repeated use and reanalysis often contribute to the spread of new forms.

Lenition is a weakening change in which sounds become less articulated or less marked. A consonant may become more approximate, fricative, or even disappear in certain positions. Lenition often occurs in environments favoring reduced effort.

6.2.2 Fortition

Fortition is a strengthening change in which sounds become more robust or more strongly articulated. This may involve greater closure, sharper articulation, or the development of a more marked consonantal quality. Fortition can occur in positions where clear contrasts are advantageous.

6.2.3 Sound shift

Sound shift is a systematic change affecting part of a language’s phonological system. It may involve a chain of related changes, such as the movement of a set of vowels or consonants through the inventory. Such shifts can substantially alter the shape of a language without necessarily changing its grammatical structure.

6.3 Dialect variation

Dialect variation refers to differences in pronunciation and phonological patterning across speech communities. Variants may differ in vowel quality, consonant realization, stress placement, or intonation. These differences are often stable within communities and can serve as markers of regional or social identity.

Phonology has practical value beyond theoretical linguistics. It informs writing systems, speech technologies, and clinical assessment, while also connecting closely to other branches of language study. These applications show how phonological analysis supports both description and communication.

7.1 Orthography and transcription

Orthography and transcription systems aim to represent speech in written form. Phonology helps determine how accurately a writing system reflects sound patterns and where spelling may differ from pronunciation. Phonetic transcription and phonological transcription serve different purposes, depending on whether detailed sound realization or abstract contrast is the focus.

7.2 Speech technology

Speech technology uses phonological knowledge in areas such as speech recognition, text-to-speech synthesis, and automatic pronunciation modeling. 7.4 Relationship to morphology and phonetics

Phonology interacts closely with morphology and phonetics. Morphology supplies the structure of words and affixes, which can trigger sound alternations at boundaries. Phonetics provides the physical realization of phonological categories, making it possible to observe how abstract patterns are implemented in speech. The three fields overlap, but each addresses a different level of linguistic organization.
