5 Ontological commitment

Ontological commitment refers to the entities a theory is taken to require if it is to be true or adequate. 5.1 Quinean criteria

Quine famously proposed that a theory’s ontological commitments are determined by what it must quantify over when translated into formal logic. 7.3 Ontology in computer science

In computer science, an ontology is a structured representation of concepts, categories, and relations within a domain. 8 Major figures

Several major philosophers have shaped ontology by proposing influential accounts of being, substance, and category. Their work forms a historical backbone for later debates, even when their systems differ sharply. Each contributed a distinct way of framing what it means for something to exist.

8.1 Parmenides

Parmenides is often regarded as one of the earliest ontological thinkers. He argued that genuine being is ungenerated, imperishable, and unchanging, and that appearance and change are unreliable guides to truth. His strict account of being forced later philosophers to explain the reality of plurality and motion. He remains a foundational figure in metaphysics because of the radical character of his claim.

8.2 Aristotle

8.6 W. V. O. Quine

W. V. O. Quine is a key figure in twentieth-century ontology because of his emphasis on ontological commitment and formal regimentation.
