Murray Hill is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located within Berkeley Heights and New Providence townships in Union County, New Jersey. It is primarily known as the historic home of Bell Labs' iconic research facility, where numerous technological innovations—including the transistor and the Unix operating system—were developed. The area is characterized by a mix of suburban residential neighborhoods, corporate research campuses, and preserved natural areas.
1 History
1.1 Native American and early European settlement
Before European contact, the area now known as Murray Hill was inhabited by the Lenape people, particularly the Unami-speaking bands. Dutch and English settlers began arriving in the late 17th century, drawn by the fertile Passaic River valley. The name "Murray Hill" is believed to derive from the Murray family, early landowners who farmed the region.
1.2 19th-century agricultural community
Throughout the 1800s, Murray Hill remained a sparsely populated agricultural settlement. Small farms and orchards dotted the landscape, and the community centered on a crossroads with a schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, and a few general stores. The arrival of the Gladstone Branch of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad in the 1870s provided a link to Newark and New York City, spurring modest growth.
1.3 20th-century Bell Labs era
1.3.1 Construction and prominence (1940s–1970s)
In 1941, Bell Telephone Laboratories selected a 200-acre tract in Murray Hill for its new research headquarters, designed by architect Ralph Thomas Walker. The facility opened in 1942 and quickly became a world-renowned center of innovation. During this period, Bell Labs scientists invented the transistor (1947), the Unix operating system (1970s), the laser, and the photovoltaic cell, among many other breakthroughs. The Murray Hill campus housed thousands of researchers and engineers, making it a landmark of American industrial research.
1.3.2 Decline and site redevelopment (1980s–present)
Following the breakup of the Bell System in 1984, AT&T gradually downsized its Bell Labs operations. Later ownership changes—to Lucent Technologies, then Alcatel-Lucent, and finally Nokia—led to further reductions in staff and the sale of portions of the campus. In the 2000s and 2010s, parts of the original site were redeveloped into a mixed-use commercial and residential complex, while the remaining research facility (now Nokia Bell Labs) continues operations on a reduced footprint.

2.1 Location and boundaries
Murray Hill is situated in southern Union County, approximately 25 miles (40 km) west of Manhattan. It borders the communities of New Providence to the east, Berkeley Heights to the south, and Summit to the north. The CDP boundaries encompass roughly 2 square miles (5.2 km²) of land.
2.2 Topography and watershed
The area lies within the Piedmont region of New Jersey, characterized by gently rolling hills and valleys. The Passaic River forms part of the western boundary of Murray Hill, and several small streams drain into it. Elevations range from about 200 feet (61 m) near the river to 350 feet (107 m) on the higher ridge where the Bell Labs campus sits.

Murray Hill has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfa) with hot, humid summers and cold winters. Average high temperatures range from 85 °F (29 °C) in July to 38 °F (3 °C) in January. Annual precipitation is about 48 inches (1,220 mm), fairly evenly distributed throughout the year.

3.1 Population
According to the 2020 United States Census, the CDP had a population of 5,521 residents, representing a modest increase from 4,961 in 2010. Population density was approximately 2,800 people per square mile.
3.2 Income and housing
The median household income in Murray Hill was $142,000 (2020), well above the state median. The housing stock consists largely of single-family homes (75%) with some townhouses and apartment complexes. The median home value exceeded $600,000.
3.3 Ethnic composition
The racial makeup of Murray Hill is predominantly White (78%), with significant Asian (14%) and Hispanic (6%) minorities. African American residents account for about 2% of the population.
4 Economy
4.1 Corporate and research institutions
4.1.1 Nokia Bell Labs (formerly Alcatel-Lucent)
The largest employer in Murray Hill is Nokia Bell Labs, the research arm of Nokia. Although much reduced from its mid-20th-century peak, the facility still conducts advanced research in communications, optics, and artificial intelligence. It remains a symbol of the community's economic identity.

Other notable corporate tenants in the Murray Hill area include a regional office of Verizon, a research center for BASF, and a facility owned by the insurance firm Chubb. These organizations contribute to the local economy and provide a mix of technical and professional jobs.

Retail activity in Murray Hill is modest, concentrated along Springfield Avenue and a small commercial strip near the train station. Businesses include a pharmacy, a supermarket, several restaurants, and a bank. Many residents commute to nearby shopping centers in Summit or Berkeley Heights for larger retail needs.

5.1 Public schools
5.1.1 Berkeley Heights Public Schools
Children living in the portion of Murray Hill within Berkeley Heights attend schools in the Berkeley Heights Public Schools district. This includes William Woodruff Elementary School, Columbia Middle School, and Governor Livingston High School, all of which have strong academic reputations.
5.1.2 New Providence School District
Residents of the New Providence section of Murray Hill are served by the New Providence School District, which operates Salt Brook Elementary School, Lieder Elementary School, New Providence Middle School, and New Providence High School. The district consistently ranks among the top in the state.
5.2 Private and parochial schools
Private educational options near Murray Hill include the Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child (a Catholic K–12 school in Summit) and the Pingry School (a private K–12 in Basking Ridge). Several nursery schools and religious Hebrew-school programs also serve the community.

6.1 Nature preserves
6.1.1 Watchung Reservation (nearby)
The Watchung Reservation, a 2,000-acre county park straddling the border of Union and Morris counties, lies just west of Murray Hill. It offers extensive hiking and biking trails, a lake, and the Trailside Nature & Science Center.
6.1.2 Passaic River parks
Along the Passaic River within Murray Hill are several small park parcels, including Passaic River Park (Union County), which provides walking paths, picnic areas, and canoe access. These green spaces preserve riparian habitat and floodplain.
6.2 Community parks and sports facilities
Murray Hill has two local parks: Murray Hill Park (on Aspen Drive) with a playground and basketball court, and the larger Berkeley Heights Community Park, located just outside the CDP, which includes soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and tennis courts.

7.1 Roadways
7.1.1 Major highways (I-78, Route 124)
Interstate 78 runs along the southern edge of Murray Hill, with an interchange at exit 41 (Springfield Avenue). New Jersey Route 124 (also called Springfield Avenue) is the main east–west road through the community, connecting to Summit and New Providence.
7.2 Public transit
7.2.1 Murray Hill train station (NJ Transit Gladstone Branch)
The Murray Hill station on NJ Transit’s Gladstone Branch provides commuter rail service to Hoboken and (via transfer) to New York Penn Station. The station is located on Aspen Drive and offers a small parking lot. Trains run approximately hourly during peak times.
7.3 Bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure
The area has limited dedicated bicycle infrastructure, but the suburban road network is generally bike-friendly. Sidewalks line most main streets, and the Passaic River Trail provides a pedestrian route along the river corridor.
8 Points of interest
8.1 Bell Labs historical buildings
The original Bell Labs complex, though partly redeveloped, includes several historically significant structures. Building 1 (the main administration building) is noted for its Art Moderne architecture. A plaque on campus commemorates the invention of the transistor. The remaining Nokia Bell Labs buildings are not generally open to the public.
8.2 Passaic River Trail
A section of the Passaic River Trail runs through the western edge of Murray Hill. This multi-use path follows the river from Summit to Chatham and offers opportunities for walking, jogging, and bird-watching.
8.3 Murray Hill Schoolhouse
The one-room Murray Hill Schoolhouse, built circa 1850, stands on Springfield Avenue. Restored and maintained by the Union County Historical Society, it occasionally hosts open houses and school field trips, representing the community’s 19th-century educational heritage.
