1.1 Origins with Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori (1870–1952) was the first woman in Italy to earn a medical degree. Her early work with children with intellectual disabilities led her to develop educational materials and methods based on observation of children's natural learning behaviors. In 1907, she opened the first Casa dei Bambini (Children's House) in the San Lorenzo district of Rome. There, she applied her principles to a class of children from low-income families, noting that when given freedom to choose activities within a prepared environment, children displayed intense concentration, self-discipline, and spontaneous learning.
1.2 Expansion and global recognition
Montessori's methods gained international attention through her writings and lectures. By the 1910s, Montessori schools had opened in Western Europe, the United States, India, and beyond. The first Montessori training course was established in Rome in 1909. Following a period of decline in the mid-20th century, the method experienced a resurgence from the 1960s onward, with widespread adoption in both private and public educational settings worldwide. Today, thousands of Montessori schools operate on every continent.
2 Core Principles
2.1 Respect for the child
Montessori education treats each child as an individual with inherent dignity. Adults refrain from interrupting concentrated activity, allow children to make choices, and communicate with kindness and honesty. The child's pace and interests guide the learning process, fostering self-esteem and intrinsic motivation.
2.2 The absorbent mind
Montessori identified the first six years of life as a period when the child unconsciously absorbs impressions from the environment—language, culture, social norms—without effort. This "absorbent mind" enables rapid, natural learning. The prepared environment should therefore offer rich, orderly stimuli that the child can assimilate spontaneously.
2.3 Sensitive periods
Children pass through specific windows of intense interest in particular areas of development, such as order, movement, language, and social skills. The classroom is carefully designed to be orderly, aesthetically pleasing, and scaled to the child's size. Materials are arranged on low, open shelves and are always accessible. The environment promotes independence: children can retrieve, use, and return materials without adult help. It includes defined workspaces, child-sized furniture, and a calm, uncluttered atmosphere.
3 Educational Materials
3.1 Sensorial materials
These materials help children refine their senses—visual, tactile, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory—by isolating one quality (e.g., color, shape, sound, texture). Each material has a built-in control of error, allowing the child to self-correct. Examples include geometric solids, fabric swatches, sound cylinders, and color tablets.
3.1.1 Pink Tower
A set of ten pink wooden cubes ranging from 1 cm³ to 10 cm³. The child builds a tower by stacking the largest cube at the bottom and the smallest at the top. This material develops visual discrimination of size, fine motor control, and an awareness of dimension.

The Pink Tower helps the child internalize concepts of volume, gradation, and spatial relationships. The activity is self-correcting: if the tower is built incorrectly, it topples. Language materials include sandpaper letters (for tracing letter shapes while saying sounds), movable alphabets (for building words), and metal insets (for pencil control). Mathematics materials use concrete, manipulative objects to introduce abstract concepts: number rods, spindle boxes, golden bead materials (for place value and operations), and fraction insets. Each follows a progression from concrete to symbolic representation.
4 Classroom Structure
4.1 Mixed-age groupings
Montessori classrooms typically span a three-year age range: 3–6 (early childhood), 6–9, and 9–12 (elementary), with similar groupings for older students. This structure fosters peer learning—younger children imitate older ones, while older children reinforce their knowledge by teaching younger peers. It also allows for continuity and strong community bonds over multiple years.
4.2 Role of the teacher as guide
The Montessori teacher is called a "guide" or "directress." Rather than delivering direct instruction to the whole class, the guide gives individual or small-group lessons, demonstrates materials, and then steps back to let the child work independently. The guide's primary task is to prepare the environment, observe children, and connect them with appropriate activities.

The guide carefully observes each child's choices, concentration levels, and social interactions. Observation is systematic and non‑intrusive; the guide notes which materials are selected, how long the child works, and any difficulties encountered. There are no scheduled transitions for group lessons or bells; children are free to follow their own work plans within the cycle.
5 Applications and Adaptations
5.1 Early childhood (ages 3–6)
The most widespread application. The classroom emphasizes sensorial, practical life, and language/mathematics materials. Children learn through hands‑on exploration rather than direct instruction. Social skills develop through mixed‑age interaction and grace‑and‑courtesy lessons. The environment is fully child‑sized, and the day includes outdoor time and a snack prepared by the children.
5.2 Elementary and secondary levels
Montessori elementary programs (ages 6–12) introduce cosmic education—an integrated study of the universe, history, science, and culture. Students engage in long‑term projects, research, and field trips. There is greater emphasis on group work, abstract reasoning, and moral development. At the secondary level (ages 12–18), the Erdkinder (land‑children) approach includes a working farm or small business where adolescents manage real economic activities, combining academic study with practical life skills.
5.3 Montessori for children with special needs
Montessori's method was originally developed for children with intellectual disabilities and remains effective for diverse needs. The hands‑on materials, self‑pacing, and individualized lessons support children with learning differences, autism, ADHD, and physical disabilities. The multi‑sensory approach benefits those who struggle with traditional verbal instruction. Many public and private special‑education programs have adopted Montessori principles or use adapted Montessori materials, though modifications may be needed for mobility or communication challenges.
