1 History

1.1 Origins and early years (1917–1962)

The Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) established the Medal of Honor in 1917, originally named the IRE Medal of Honor. It was first awarded later that year to Edwin H. Armstrong for his invention of the regenerative circuit, a foundational contribution to radio communication. 1.2 Merger with AIEE and transition to IEEE (1963–1980)

In 1963 the IRE merged with the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) to form the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The Medal of Honor continued as the new organization’s highest award. The criteria were broadened to cover all fields within the IEEE’s expanded scope, including power engineering, control systems, and solid-state electronics. During this period the medal was awarded to Claude Shannon (1966), John Bardeen (1971), and Jack Kilby (1986), reflecting the growing importance of information theory, semiconductors, and integrated circuits.

1.3 Modern era (1981–present)

After 1980, the Medal of Honor increasingly recognized contributions to computing, communications, and multidisciplinary innovation. Recipients from this era include Gordon Moore (2008) for his role in semiconductor advancement, Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn (2012) for TCP/IP protocols, and Lynn Conway (2022) for VLSI design methodology. The medal continues to be awarded annually, honoring work that has had a transformative impact on engineering and technology worldwide.

2 Criteria and selection process

2.1 Eligibility requirements

The Medal of Honor is open to any individual, regardless of nationality or IEEE membership, who has made an exceptional contribution or demonstrated an extraordinary career in engineering fields covered by the IEEE. The contribution must have had a significant influence on the profession or on society.

2.2 Nomination and evaluation

3.2.1 Edwin H. Armstrong (1917)

Edwin Howard Armstrong received the first Medal of Honor for his invention of the regenerative circuit, a key advance in radio reception. He later developed the superheterodyne receiver and frequency modulation (FM) radio, fundamentally shaping modern communications.

3.2.2 Claude Shannon (1940)

Claude Elwood Shannon was awarded the medal for his work on information theory, which established the mathematical foundation for data compression, error correction, and digital communication. His 1948 paper “A Mathematical Theory of Communication” remains a cornerstone of engineering.

4 Design and symbolism

4.1 Medal physical description

The IEEE Medal of Honor is a gold medal, approximately 3 inches (76 mm) in diameter. Its obverse features a stylized figure representing the spirit of electrical engineering, often depicted as a male figure holding a lightning bolt and a gear wheel. The reverse side bears the IEEE logo and a laurel wreath encircling the name of the recipient and year. The medal is suspended from a blue ribbon.

4.2 Engraving and inscription

The front of the medal is engraved with the words “IEEE Medal of Honor” around the edge. The reverse side includes the recipient’s name and the award year, along with the IEEE emblem and the Latin phrase “Ad honorem” (meaning “for honor”). The design emphasizes the medal’s role as a mark of supreme achievement in the field.

5 Impact and recognition

5.1 Prestige within engineering community

The IEEE Medal of Honor is widely regarded as the highest distinction in electrical and electronics engineering. It is often equated with a Nobel Prize in engineering, and recipients are celebrated as pioneers who have shaped modern technology. 5.2 Comparison with other engineering honors

While the Nobel Prize is awarded in physics, chemistry, and other sciences, the IEEE Medal of Honor is specifically focused on engineering contributions. It is considered the most prestigious of the IEEE’s numerous awards, surpassing the IEEE Edison Medal (for electrical engineering) and the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal (for communications). International honors such as the Japan Prize or the Draper Prize also recognize engineering, but the Medal of Honor’s century-long history and its association with iconic inventors give it a unique stature.
