Finland (Finnish: Suomi; Swedish: Finland) is a Nordic country in Northern Europe, bordered by Sweden to the west, Norway to the north, and Russia to the east. It is known for its vast forests, thousands of lakes, the midnight sun, and vibrant cultural traditions such as the sauna. With a population of approximately 5.5 million, Finland has a highly developed welfare state and is frequently ranked among the world’s happiest and most stable countries. The capital and largest city is Helsinki.

## 1 Geography

### 1.1 Physical geography

Finland covers about 338,000 square kilometers, making it the eighth-largest country in Europe. The landscape is predominantly flat or gently rolling, shaped by glacial activity. The bedrock is ancient Precambrian shield, with numerous eskers, moraines, and drumlins.

#### 1.1.1 Lakes and rivers

Finland is known as the “land of a thousand lakes,” with over 188,000 lakes larger than 500 square meters. The largest is Lake Saimaa, followed by Lake Päijänne and Lake Inari. Rivers are generally short and flow into the Baltic Sea or the Arctic Ocean. The longest river is the Kemijoki.

The Finnish coastline along the Baltic Sea features the Archipelago Sea, a maze of thousands of islands between Turku and the Åland Islands. The coast is mostly low-lying with small cliffs and sandy beaches in some areas. The Åland Islands form an autonomous region with a distinct Swedish-speaking culture.

Finland has a temperate continental climate in the south and a subarctic climate in the north. Winters are cold and snowy; summers are mild to warm. Day length varies dramatically: in the far north, the sun does not set for weeks in summer (midnight sun) and does not rise for weeks in winter (polar night). In southern Finland, summer days can last up to 19 hours, while winter days as little as 6 hours.
