10.3 Cultural variation
Cultural variation affects the meaning, timing, and emphasis of developmental expectations. Different societies may value independence, interdependence, communication styles, or age-related responsibilities differently. As a result, stage descriptions are not universally identical.
Cultural context shapes what counts as typical progress. It influences caregiving practices, schooling, and social roles. Developmental models therefore need cultural awareness to be interpreted responsibly.
10.4 Critiques of rigid staging
Rigid staging is criticized for implying that development happens in fixed, universal steps. Such an approach can understate flexibility, context, and ongoing change. It may also encourage overly narrow judgments about what is normal.
More adaptive models view development as shaped by interaction among biology, environment, and experience. They allow for both pattern and variation. This broader perspective is often better suited to real-world human development.
