# China

**China**, officially the **People's Republic of China**, is a vast country in East Asia. It is the world's most populous nation, known for its rich cultural heritage spanning thousands of years, diverse landscapes ranging from the Himalayan peaks to the Gobi Desert, and a rapidly modernizing society. Its major cities include Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, while its traditional arts, cuisine, and philosophical traditions have influenced the globe.

## 1 Geography

China's geography is characterized by immense diversity, shaped by tectonic activity, climate gradients, and ancient river systems. The country spans approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, making it the fourth-largest country by land area.

### 1.1 Physical Features

#### 1.1.1 Mountain Ranges and Plateaus

The Tibetan Plateau, often called the "Roof of the World," covers much of southwestern China and averages over 4,500 meters in elevation. Bordering this plateau are some of the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest (8,848 m) on the Nepal–China border. The Himalayas stretch along the southern edge. Further north, the Kunlun and Tian Shan ranges create natural barriers, while the Qinling Mountains form a climatic and ecological divide between northern and southern China. The Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in the southwest features dramatic karst landscapes.

#### 1.1.2 Rivers and Lakes

The Yangtze River (Chang Jiang), the longest in Asia, flows 6,300 km from the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea, supporting vast agricultural and industrial regions. The Yellow River (Huang He), often called the "cradle of Chinese civilization," traverses the northern plains and is known for its heavy silt load. Other major rivers include the Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) in the south and the Mekong (Lancang Jiang) in the southwest. China also has numerous lakes, the largest freshwater lake being Poyang Lake in Jiangxi, and the largest saltwater lake being Qinghai Lake in the northwest.
