Alfred North Whitehead was born on February 15, 1861, in Ramsgate, Kent, England, into an Anglican clerical family. The theory, presented in the *Principia*, was later refined into the “ramified theory of types” together with the axiom of reducibility. Critics—most notably Ludwig Wittgenstein and Frank P. Ramsey—argued that the ramified theory was unnecessarily complicated and that the axiom of reducibility lacked justification. 3.1 Transition from logic to metaphysics
After the completion of *Principia Mathematica*, Whitehead turned increasingly to philosophy of nature and metaphysics. He had become dissatisfied with the “bifurcation of nature” into primary (mathematical) and secondary (perceptual) qualities, a dualism he traced back to seventeenth‑century science. In his natural philosophy works of the 1910s, he developed an “event‑based” ontology that treated nature as a passage of overlapping events, with objects as recurring patterns. This event ontology directly anticipated the metaphysics of *Process and Reality*.
3.2 *Science and the Modern World* (1925)
3.2.1 Critique of scientific materialism
*Science and the Modern World*, based on the Lowell Lectures delivered at Harvard, launched Whitehead’s metaphysical critique of the mechanistic view of nature. He argued that scientific materialism—the belief that ultimate reality consists of bits of matter moving in space and time—is both philosophically inadequate and inconsistent with the findings of modern physics, especially relativity and quantum theory. Materialism, Whitehead claimed, ignores the internal relatedness and dynamic character of actual things.

A central concept in this work is the “fallacy of misplaced concreteness,” which occurs when an abstract concept (e.g., “point,” “instant,” “matter”) is mistaken for a concrete reality. God is a unique, non‑temporal actual entity that envisages all eternal objects and provides the initial aim for each becoming occasion. God’s consequent nature receives the finite achievements of every occasion, preserving them permanently.
3.3.2 The principle of relativity and concrescence
Whitehead’s principle of relativity states that every actual entity is present in every other actual entity, by virtue of “prehension”—the way one occasion grasps or incorporates data from others. The process by which an occasion unifies its pretensions into a determinate whole is called “concrescence.” Through concrescence, a novel occasion becomes “satisfied,” achieving its own unique synthesis. This process is governed by the “category of the ultimate,” which Whitehead calls “creativity”—the universal activity that makes novelty possible.
3.3.3 The reformed subjectivist principle
Whitehead reformulated the subjectivist principle (that the being of an entity is its becoming for a subject) in an organic way. Instead of reducing reality to experience in a single human mind, he argued that every actual entity is a subject of its own experience, however minimal. This “reformed subjectivist principle” grounds his panexperientialism: feeling and subjectivity are present throughout nature, not confined to high‑level organisms. *Adventures of Ideas* traces the role of philosophical and religious ideas in shaping civilisation. Whitehead argues that historical progress occurs through the interplay of stable customs and novel ideas. Civilisation advances when societies allow free speculation and then adopt new ideals into practical life. He discusses the influence of Plato, Christianity, and the scientific revolution as examples of the “adventures” of ideas.
3.4.2 Truth, beauty, and value
The later chapters of *Adventures of Ideas* develop an aesthetic metaphysics. Whitehead identifies beauty as the harmony of contrasted feelings, and truth as the conformation of appearance to reality. Value arises from the intensity and depth of experience achieved by actual occasions. He holds that the aim of both nature and civilisation is the production of “the best” in terms of aesthetic quality, which ultimately relates to the divine nature. 4.1 Core tenets of process thought
4.1.1 Panexperientialism and organicism
Process philosophy holds that all fundamental entities enjoy a rudimentary form of experience, hence the term “panexperientialism.” Unlike panpsychism, which often attributes consciousness to everything, panexperientialism attributes a pre‑reflective, non‑conscious feeling to each actual occasion. This is combined with “organicism”—the view that the universe is a network of interdependent, growing processes, not a collection of inert bits. These tenets reject reductionism and permit a continuity between physics, biology, and psychology.
4.1.2 The ontological principle
The ontological principle in Whitehead’s system states that every reason for a fact must be found in some actual entity. There are no abstract universals floating free of concrete beings. For Whitehead, even mathematical truths and logical laws are grounded in the nature of actual occasions or in God’s primordial nature. 4.2 Influence on theology (process theology)
4.2.1 Charles Hartshorne and later developments
The most influential exponent of Whitehead for theology was Charles Hartshorne (1897–2000), who refined process theism and engaged in extensive dialogue with classical theism. Hartshorne developed Whitehead’s concept of a dipolar God—having both a primordial (eternal, abstract) and a consequent (temporal, concrete) nature—into a fully articulated “neoclassical” theism. Later process theologians, such as John B. Cobb Jr., David Ray Griffin, and Marjorie Hewitt Suchocki, applied Whiteheadian ideas to Christology, eschatology, and ecological theology.
4.2.2 The God of process theism
In process theism, God is not an omnipotent, immutable ruler but a persuasive, caring partner who lures the world toward richer forms of experience. God’s power is not coercive but relational; every actual occasion is free but receives an “initial aim” from God, which it can accept, modify, or reject. This conception addresses the problem of evil by denying that God could unilaterally prevent suffering, and it resonates with contemporary relational views of divinity.

Whitehead’s emphasis on events, internal relations, and indeterminacy bears striking parallels to quantum mechanics. His view that an atom is a society of occasions, each with a degree of self‑determination, prefigured the “Copenhagen interpretation” in some respects. Physicists such as Henry Stapp and David Bohm have engaged with Whitehead’s philosophy as a framework for understanding quantum wholeness and complementarity. The process approach also aligns with the role of the observer in quantum measurement, though Whitehead himself did not explicitly anticipate quantum theory.
4.3.2 Relevance to systems theory and ecological thought
Whitehead’s organic and holistic metaphysics has been highly influential in ecology and systems theory. The idea of ecosystems as networks of interdependent events mirrors his notion of societies of occasions. Environmental philosophers, including John B. Cobb Jr., have used Whitehead to argue for an intrinsic value in nature that is neither anthropocentric nor purely biocentric. Process thought supports an ethics of care and mutual enhancement, rather than domination, and has been applied to sustainability, land ethics, and the philosophy of ecology.
